Inspired by the long-established Emirati tradition of the majlis, Women's World Majlis is our global platform for convening leading women from all walks of life to give voice to critical, often underrepresented, perspectives for transforming our world.

Launched at Expo 2020 Dubai, as part of the Programme for People and Planet, our Women's World Majlis has featured more than a dozen sessions designed to mainstream women's perspectives on global priorities.

Our latest Women's World Majlis session was held during Sustainable Cities in Action Forum 2024. Titled Women's World Majlis: Women Transforming Cities, the session featured leading female urbanists and practitioners advocating women's inclusion in urban placemaking.

Event highlights

Sustainable Cities in Action Forum 2024

An essential gathering of thought leaders and practitioners driving positive change in urban landscapes across the MEASA region, Sustainable Cities in Action Forum’s mission is to provide solutions for transformative change to make cities more prosperous, equitable, low carbon and climate resilient.

At our maiden event in March 2024, the Women's World Majlis session, moderated by Andrew Tuck, Editor in Chief of Monocle, saw an expert panel of female urbanists and practitioners advocate for enabling women to be seen, heard and included in urban planning processes. During an animated and thought-provoking discussion, speakers concluded that this means understanding how women and girls live, work and play in the city, and identifying the blind spots and biases that create barriers to them owning urban space.

Expo 2020 Dubai

During Expo 2020, our Women's World Majlis series welcomed accomplished guests such as lawyer, entrepreneur and former First Lady of Namibia HE Monica Geingos, Dr Jane Olwoch, Executive Director of the Southern Africa Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive land Management, and Christiana Figueres, architect of the Paris Climate Agreement.
