Download our special bulletin: Reflections from Expo City Dubai on the ocean and our collective responsibility to protect our most precious resource, water

Billions of people worldwide lack access to clean drinking water and sanitation, a situation exacerbated by climate change and population growth. Meanwhile, our oceans are straining under the weight of man-made waste and plastic pollution.

Expo 2020 Dubai’s Water Week enabled those at the sharp end of the global water crisis to share a platform with scientists, innovators and policymakers to relate first-hand experiences of the impact on their communities and collaboratively explore solutions.

Throughout Expo, visitors and International Participants took away the urgent message that water is our world’s most precious resource.

We are living off the bank account of water at the expense of future generations

Rick Hogeboom, Executive Director, Water Footprint Network, speaking at Expo 2020 Dubai's Water Week

From Expo 2020 Dubai's Declaration for People and Planet

Water is the foundation of all life on Earth, fuelling our growth and connecting communities the world over. Yet, we do not understand its true value, leading to mismanagement and inequitable access and distribution of this common good. We must reimagine our relationship with water, from one of extraction to one of responsibility, valuing it for the vitality it brings to our cultures and communities. As responsible stewards, we need to raise awareness among government, business and individuals that water is the critical resource for a well-nourished, climate-safe and peaceful planet. We must forge robust and binding international frameworks and collaborations to build a sustainable blue economy that avoids the exploitation of our oceans and waterways. We need to find innovative business and finance models to attract the private investment required to ensure access to water for all

Expo 2020 Dubai asked illustrators from around the world to interpret the themes of the Programme for People and Planet. This Water illustration was created by Toni Demuro from Italy

The journey continues

Building on the global impact of Expo 2020 Dubai’s Programme for People and Planet, which was endorsed by the UAE Cabinet and adopted by 192 nations, we continue to bring together global leaders, industry experts and diverse voices from communities across the globe to chart a shared path forward on the world’s most pressing priorities.
